Castle
Oral History
Project
In Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, plenty of medieval structures remain and have been subsumed into the everyday experience of the built environment.
The continued presence of medieval architecture within British and Irish landscapes means that modern people understand these structures in their own terms. Locals living near medieval sites, specifically castles, understand the medieval past in a more intimate way than if they could only interact with medieval material culture in a museum or archive.
This project seeks to understand the relationship between those living near medieval castles today and the castles themselves. By collecting oral histories, community members will describe their own knowledge of the castle be a co-producer in new knowledge about the site.
